VELENJE is an administrative and economic centre of the Salek Valley. It was first mentioned as a market town in 1264. Its economic development started after the discovery of coal at the end of the 19th century. The majority of the present town was built after 1959. Velenje is not only, due to its manufacturing industry (www.gorenje.si), among the most important Slovene economic centres, it represents also one of the most important educational, cultural and sport centres in the country. The Castle of Velenje is the most preserved castle of the Salek Valley. It was originally built in the 13th century and owes its present image to the renovations in the 17th century
