CitrusPack bioplastic packaging among the finalists in the competition for the Sustainability Awards 2021 02:06:2021

Innovative results of the LIFE Citruspack project - Biodegradable packaging for the cosmetics and food industry are participating in the world-renowned competition for the best examples of sustainable packaging products - Sustainability Awards 2021. TECOS Slovenian Tool and Die Development Centre is a proud member of the LIFE Citruspack consortium, which was chosen in the final selection with exceptional sustainable products.

More than 300 participants applied for the competition, among which 46 judges from all over the world selected only 28 best research and development projects, which were placed as finalists in various evaluation categories. Our biodegradable packaging for the cosmetics and food industry was placed in the Pre-Commercialized Innovation category, where it is ranked among the top 4 sustainable solutions.

In the final selection, the judges will select the winning sustainability ideas in each of the 8 available categories. The winners of each category will be announced at the awards ceremony, which will take place as part of the Sustainable Packaging Summiton 29 September at FachPack in Nuremberg, Germany.

The CITRUSPACK project introduces the concept of a circular economy into the industrial practice of reusing waste raw materials from the citruses, used in juice production. The project was completed at the end of 2020, and TECOS was in charge for the design and manufacture of cosmetic packaging. Among that we tested many new biocomposite materials based on citrus fibres, extracted from the raw materials of lemons, oranges and clementines. In addition to cosmetic packaging, during the project Spanish partner Aitiip also developed biodegradable polymer bottles for packaging citrus juices.

Cosmetic pot with a volume capacity of 50 ml is made of biocomposite material, which under appropriate conditions of industrial composting decomposes into CO2, water and biomass in less than 12 weeks, which is in accordance with European standard EN 13432. Cosmetic packaging consists of three components: outer housing, inner cartridge and lid. Prototyping tools for the injection moulding line are ready for series production, so we are kindly inviting everyone who can relate to the concept of sustainable packaging and sees it as a potential and opportunity of their own green story to contact us. Together, we will explore our common collaboration options, the possibility of introducing new packaging among your existing products and send you free test samples.
